Duggie was born in Johannesburg, 19 September 1943 and lives in the Free State. His interest in art started in his twenties and he started painting while working in the mines. For three years he sent his work to a college in Westport, Connecticutt USA. "I painted part time until I met Suzette who inspired me and ever since I am painting full time". He later studied through the College for Famous Artist in Westpark.
He describes his work as classical impressionistic. His preferred medium is oil. He uses interesting themes like vegetables, fruit, old bottles, music, portrait and figure studies. His work stands out in its rich earthly colours.
He taught himself by doing intensive studies on the following artist's techniques: John Singer, Anders Zorn, Rembrandt, Vermeer,Sorolla.
There is a striking uniqueness in his work. Duggie mastered the technique of using light and darkness in his paintings to create the image of something real and alive. He taught himself by doing intensive studies on the techniques of artists John Singer, Anders Zorn, Rembrandt, Vermeer and Sorolla.
