OUR ARTIST

Nicolize
Mulder

When creating a new mixed-media sculpture, Nicolize Mulder always starts by writing a short story or piece of dialogue. The artist then combines ceramics, leather and metal to translate her tales. She finds that the tactile, earthy mediums communicate well with one another. She enjoys the often unpredictable and surprising plot twists any or all of the mediums may yield through the addition chemicals, heat and pressure. Her work varies from quirky to sombre, often containing themes of spirituality. The artist often returns to the roots of the piece – she adds text and typography as a visual element. This creates another, more tangible layer of meaning in her conversation with the viewer. She is also known to sneak in tongue-in-cheek comment on current events. Apart from sculpting, the Pretoria-based artist finds joy in writing and being an entrepreneur, leather artisan and mother.
